Abstract

The human service professions are moving in the direction of evidenced-based practice, emphasizing the necessity of an adequate empirical foundation for interventions. To be claimed as an empirically supported treatment (EST), a therapeutic approach should meet the standards criteria set out for ESTs. This study reviewed 22 outcome studies of family interventions published in the Korean Journal of Family Therapy in order to identify whether the interventions met the criteria of ESTs. The studies reviewed were found to be closer to studies of effectiveness rather than studies of efficacy, as they were exposed to the threat of interval validity. Based on these findings, recommendations were made for methods of research to enhance credibility and to promote triangulation in outcome measurement.
